The Forging Process

Forging is a process whereby metal is pressed, pounded or squeezed under pressure into high strength parts known as forgings. The process is normally (but not always) performed hot by preheating the metal to a desired temperature before it is worked.

The forging process is entirely different from the casting (foundry) process, as metal used to make forged parts is never melted and poured into a mold (as in the casting process) but rather is first cast as an ingot or Billet and is then heated to be Forged or Pressed, pounded or squeezed in order to achieve the desired shape and size required.

This forging process produces parts much stronger than can be produced utilizing any other metalworking process due to the fact that Forgings have a much more uniform structure and a finer grain size than castings which results in more predictable and uniform properties as well as higher yield strengths for any given hardness level. Further, Forgings do not have "Soft Spots" which can be found in castings which are defects that can develop into cracks. The Pressing Process, which directs the metal's grain flow, eliminates any potential "Soft Spots" that may be found in the Ingots or Billets ultimately giving each Forging ultimate achievable strength.

How To Produce Forgings

The following machines can produce forgings:

1.) Hydraulic Open Die Forging Presses & Open Die Forging Hammers

Open Die Forging does not utilize any pattern or shaped dies therefore, there are no die costs. Furthermore, forgings produced by this method are shaped close to the final desired shape thus minimizing material waste. Open Die Forging Presses are designed and built-in sizes up to and including around 20,000 tons. Open Die Forging Hammers are designed and built-in sizes up to and including around 220,000 lbs.

2.) Hydraulic Closed Die Forging Presses, Mechanical Forging Presses & Closed Die Forging Hammers

Closed Die Forging utilizes shaped dies in which a part is forged into a specific shape. Unlike Open Die Forging Systems, Closed Die Forging Systems offer a more precise way to produce a complex part through the Forging Process such as Gear Blanks, and parts with more complex shapes. Parts are formed by the pressing of two dies together where the part is fully enclosed inside the two dies. Usually an Upper die and a Lower die.
